America made history after getting a 1-1 tie away in Monterrey to win the Liga MX championship, which made them the first team to win a three peat since the short season format started in Liga MX back in 1996. America also won their 16 Liga MX title, by far the biggest winner, 4 more than their closest rival Chivas. It’s clear that Club America now sits on top of Mexican club football.

The first half started with America coming out with their best 11 available while Monterrey had the bad news that Lucas Ocampos couldn’t come back from his injury from the first leg and was out of the match. A cross into the area was headed by Brandon Vazquez but it went right to America’s goalkeeper, Luis Malagon. It looked like America’s forward, Henry Martin had injured himself as he started limping although he remained in the match. After Monterrey lost the ball, Kevin Alvarez got the ball in the area and his close range shot was blocked by Monterrey’s goalkeeper Luis Cardenas. It was a good chance but had the ball gone in, it would have been disallowed for offside. Off a free kick, a cross into the area was headed by Martin into the net but the goal was correctly ruled to be offside. A cross into the area was well headed back by Alejandro Zendejas towards Richard Sanchez, who from way outside the area would release a bomb of a right footed shot past Cardenas to score a wonderful goal that gave America the 1-0 lead. It was an historically good goal from Sanchez, who had once again score a fantastic goal for America in a final. A cross into the area found German Berterame, who got off a good right footed shot but Malagon made a great save on it. After Kevin Alvarez got off a good pass in the area, Zendejas would get to the ball and get off a right footed shot that was barely cleared by Erick Aguirre in a very good chance for America. Because of injury, Henry Martin had to be subbed out for Rodrigo Aguirre. Aguirre, who had a unsuccessful spell in Monterrey, got soundly booed. The halftime whistle blew and although Monterrey had a good start, they faltered and America had clearly been the better team especially after taking the lead.
